Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse and Shop

Perennial Premiere is held every spring at the Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

As part of the Oldfields estate, the Greenhouse originally provided plants and produce for the residents. The first glasshouses were built in the 1920s and the present structures were constructed in the late 1940s.

The Greenhouse had fallen into disrepair and was slated for demolition in 1972. That peril was the genesis of the Indianapolis Museum of Art Horticultural Society, which was founded that year to spearhead renovation of the Greenhouse and to foster development of the IMA grounds and gardens. Fully renovated in recent years, the Greenhouse continues working into a new century. Open year-round, visitors may enjoy the pleasures of live plants, while learning from the knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

The Greenhouse holds several programs throughout the year, including propagation workshops, plant classes and more. Perennial Premiere each April offers museum members and Hort Soc members special discounts and shopping hours for a prime selection of plants and garden accessories before opening to the general public.

GeenhouseThe Greenhouse is Indianapolis’ go-to retailer for tropical plants for the summer garden, a large collection of begonias for houseplants and other exotics perfect for the home or garden. The Greenhouse also has many hard-to-find native perennials and shrubs along with some of the latest introductions of plants from other lands that do well in the Indiana garden.

Celebrate Holiday Hullabaloo at the Greenhouse with special sales and events. You’ll find one-of-a-kind ornaments and other fine gifts for all those on your holiday list.
